FD Calculator

A fixed deposit pays a rate agreed at the start and returns your capital at the end. There is no market risk, which is why it remains the right home for an emergency fund or money needed on a known date. Indian banks normally compound a cumulative FD quarterly — that default is set here, and can be changed to match your deposit receipt.

What this calculator assumes

  • The deposit is cumulative: interest is added to the deposit rather than paid out, and compounds.
  • The rate stays fixed for the whole term, which is what an FD contracts to do.
  • TDS is not deducted here. Banks deduct tax at source once interest crosses the threshold for the year, and the interest is taxable as income in your slab either way.
  • Breaking the deposit early usually costs a penalty of around 0.5% to 1% on the rate. That is not modelled.

Deposit and small-savings rates are set by the bank or by the Government of India and change from time to time. Use the rate actually quoted to you. This calculator does not account for TDS, premature-withdrawal penalties or any tax you may owe on the interest.

Questions people ask us about this

Is FD interest taxable?

Yes, fully, as income at your slab rate — in the year it accrues, not only when you receive it. Banks deduct TDS once the interest crosses the annual threshold, but TDS is not the final tax. Senior citizens get an additional deduction on deposit interest under section 80TTB.

Is my money in a bank FD safe?

Deposits with a scheduled bank are insured by DICGC up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank, covering principal and interest together. Spreading very large amounts across banks is a reasonable precaution. Company and NBFC deposits are not covered by that insurance at all.

FD or a debt mutual fund?

An FD gives a contracted rate and no fluctuation. A debt fund does not contract anything and its value moves with interest rates, though it can be more efficient over longer holdings. The right answer depends on when you need the money and what you would do if its value dipped. We will talk it through rather than push one.

A number is not a plan

This tool does arithmetic. It does not know your income, your other commitments, how you would react to a bad year, or what tax you pay. Send us the figure you arrived at and we will tell you honestly whether the plan behind it holds up.
