CAGR Calculator

"It doubled" means very different things over four years and over twenty. Compound Annual Growth Rate flattens an investment's whole journey into the single annual rate that would have produced the same result — which is what makes two investments held for different lengths of time comparable at all.

Use CAGR only where one amount went in and one came out. For a SIP, where instalments arrive on different dates, the correct measure is XIRR — your account statement shows it, and we can explain what it means for your own holdings.

What this calculator assumes

  • One amount in, one amount out, nothing added or withdrawn in between. For a SIP, CAGR is the wrong measure — XIRR is, because the instalments arrive on different dates.
  • Costs and taxes are not deducted unless they are already reflected in the end value you enter.

Please read this

A past CAGR describes what already happened. It is not a forecast, and a fund that returned 14% over the last ten years has no obligation to do so over the next ten. Mutual fund investments are subject to market risks; read all scheme-related documents carefully.

Questions people ask us about this

CAGR or absolute return — which should I look at?

Both are shown. Absolute return is the total percentage gain, which is fine for a single year. CAGR is the annualised figure, and is the only fair way to compare holdings of different lengths.

A number is not a plan

This tool does arithmetic. It does not know your income, your other commitments, how you would react to a bad year, or what tax you pay. Send us the figure you arrived at and we will tell you honestly whether the plan behind it holds up.
